I combined vanilla rum, Fernet, and Disaronno, and topped with lime juice, hazelnut syrup, and Coke. Would you simplify this? What do you think of it? Is there too much going on, or is it good?

Your cocktail creation sounds intriguing and quite complex! Combining vanilla rum, fernet, Disaronno, lime juice, hazelnut syrup, and coke certainly offers a diverse array of flavors. Each ingredient brings something unique to the table: the vanilla rum adds a sweet, creamy essence, fernet provides herbal and bitter notes, Disaronno brings in the rich almond flavor, lime juice offers a tangy citrus kick, hazelnut syrup contributes a nutty sweetness, and coke rounds it all off with its familiar, caramelized taste and effervescence.

However, this combination might be a bit busy with so many strong and distinct flavors competing for attention. Simplifying the concoction could help highlight the qualities of each ingredient better. For a more balanced mix, you might consider reducing the ingredient list. Here’s a simplified version that retains the essence of your original idea:

  • Vanilla Rum: 30 ml
  • Disaronno: 30 ml
  • Fernet: 15 ml
  • Lime Juice: Squeeze of half a lime
  • Coke: Top up

This streamlined combination still offers a variety of flavors: the sweetness of vanilla rum and Disaronno, the herbal bitterness from a smaller amount of fernet, the refreshing tang from lime juice, and the caramel notes from coke. If you particularly enjoy the hazelnut flavor, you could consider using Frangelico (a hazelnut liqueur) in place of or alongside Disaronno, but be mindful to adjust quantities to avoid overpowering the drink.

Ultimately, refining the ingredients can create a more cohesive and enjoyable cocktail experience. Give this simplified version a try, and feel free to tweak it based on your taste preferences!
