Power tips
Elevate the Pura Vida Coffee Cocktail with these master mixologist tips
- Dial the mezcal style to the coffee note: for a cleaner, café-mocha profile use an espadín that’s more mineral/citrus than rubbery-smoke; if your mezcal is aggressively smoky, drop it to 35 ml and compensate body with +5 ml Averna. The goal is smoke as a frame, not the main character—otherwise it flattens the coffee and turns the finish ashy.
- Stir for texture, not just chill: this drink wants a ‘silky Manhattan’ dilution—aim ~20–25% water. Use large, cold, dry cubes and stir until the outside of the mixing glass is uniformly frosted and the sound of the ice softens (typically 35–45 seconds depending on ice). Under-dilution makes it spiky and bitter; over-dilution makes the coffee taste thin and the smoke dominates.
