The Classic sits firmly in the brandy-sour family: a spirit-forward cocktail glass serve that balances fruit, citrus, and sweetness into something crisp and polished. While the name nods to old-school cocktail sensibilities, you’ll find it reads more like a timeless template than a single, well-documented historical original—brandy taking the lead, with a liqueur accent and fresh lemon to sharpen the edges.
On the palate, the brandy’s rich warmth forms the backbone, while maraschino cherry liqueur adds a distinctive sweet-fruit depth that feels both floral and darkly fruity. Lemon juice brings a clean, bright tartness that keeps the drink lifted, and the teaspoon of sugar smooths the transition between the lemon’s bite and the liqueur’s sweetness. The lemon wedge reinforces the citrus aroma and keeps each sip feeling fresh.
Serve it when you want something elegant but not fussy—ideal as a pre-dinner drink or a simple “cocktail hour” pour. If you enjoy sours that lean a touch richer and more aromatic than a straight whiskey or gin version, this is an easy fit, especially for brandy fans looking for a sharper, cherry-kissed twist.

Ingredients
Cocktail Colin says:
Brandy leads with warm depth, lifted by the floral cherry sweetness of maraschino liqueur, while lemon juice and a teaspoon of sugar sharpen and round the edges into a crisp, bright sour; the lemon wedge adds a final aromatic squeeze. It works because the lemon’s bite keeps the brandy and maraschino from feeling heavy, making it ideal for sour lovers who want a spirit-forward, polished cocktail-glass drink.

FAQ's
What type of brandy is best used in The Classic cocktail?
For The Classic cocktail, using a high-quality VS or VSOP brandy is recommended. These designations indicate that the brandy has been aged for a minimum of two to four years for VS (Very Special) or four to six years for VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale), respectively. These aged brandies offer a depth of flavor that complements the other ingredients well.
How can I enhance the presentation of The Classic cocktail?
To enhance the presentation of The Classic, consider adding a twist of lemon peel along with the lemon wedge. The oils from the lemon peel add both aroma and a subtle flavor nuance. Additionally, ensure that the maraschino cherry liqueur provides a vibrant color and consider skewering a maraschino cherry as part of the garnish.
Is there a recommended temperature for serving The Classic?
The Classic cocktail should be served cold. Achieve this by shaking the ingredients with ice before straining into a chilled cocktail glass. The cold temperature enhances the flavors and provides a refreshing experience, especially in warmer climates or seasons.
How does the alcohol content in The Classic compare to other classic cocktails?
With an alcohol content of 27.63%, The Classic falls into the mid-range category when compared to other classic cocktails. For instance, a classic martini might have an alcohol content of around 32% due to its higher proportion of gin or vodka, while a mojito may have a lower alcohol content, typically around 10-15%, given its use of rum mixed with a larger volume of non-alcoholic components. The Classic offers a balanced option for those preferring neither too strong nor too weak a cocktail.
Can I make a non-alcoholic version of The Classic?
Yes, you can create a non-alcoholic version of The Classic by substituting the brandy with a non-alcoholic spirit or apple juice for a similar flavor profile. Instead of maraschino cherry liqueur, use a cherry syrup. Adjust the lemon juice and sugar to taste. This variation allows everyone to enjoy the essence of The Classic without the alcohol.
