5 cocktails to celebrate 10 years since the first Sex and the City movie
Jump to
In 2008 the original Sex and the City movie was released, 4 years after the iconic series came to an end. It won itself a whole new host of Sex and the City lovers and paved the way for two more sequels to the film. Set in New York City and following the adventures and tribulations of 4 female friends: Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, the four ladies deal with their lives as single women in the Big Apple.
"The truth was, vodka was my only ally." - Carrie
The series and movie featured many a cocktail, not only popularising the now iconic Cosmopolitan - the film ends with all four ladies sipping on one, but also many a Dirty Martini, Bellini, Tartini, Flirtini and other 'ini' drinks. Not to mention imbibing on a Mojito or two. Never mind that the actual drinks were just watered down cranberry juices, or water with food colouring in (the actors may not have remembered their lines otherwise), the movie still paved the way for cocktails the world over to grow in popularity and expertise.
If you wanted to try every cocktail in the series we've got you covered with a list for you here, but if not, here are our top 5 cocktails that the show featured, or are inspired by the amazing film and tv franchise to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the first film.
"I’d like a cheeseburger, large fries, and a cosmopolitan." - Carrie
1. The Cosmopolitan
I mean, we couldn't start anywhere but the Cosmo. Almost drank daily by one of the girls, this iconic drink of vodka, Cointreau, lime and cranberry juice is a classic for a reason. Fresh, zingy, and down right delightful there's a reason it's always featured in bar menus the world over. You'd be hard pressed to find a bartender who doesn't know this drink.

2. The Flirtini
Originally drank on a rooftop party, after some episode escapades involving chickens, the episode opened up the way for the Flirtini to become a Sex and the City household name. An extra kick of vodka mixed with some pineapple juice, before being topped up with Champagne certainly gets our attention. Or it would if I could remember the 4th or 5th I tried....

3. The Absolut Hunk
Although created by Absolut to take advantage of the fake advertising billboard used in season six of Sex and the City, this cocktail still works like a charm and hits our number 3 spot. Taking vodka (of course) with pineapple juice, some lime juice and a snatch of sugar syrup, the ingredients are mixed together with ice to create this sweet and simple charmer. Bring me another.

4. Glamour Gal
Ok, so, we're kinda cheating here; the Glamour Gal was actually featured in Sex and the City 2 (and not the original) and created by Skyy Vodka especially for the release, but it's just so good we couldn't resist. The core ingredient of Skyy Vodka is mellowed out by some silky Creme de Cassis, before adding a touch of zing from some lime and lemon juice. Add a splash of sugar syrup and you're away (with the fairies). What's not to like?

5. The Tartini
During a party with Stanford Carrie brings out the now-famous Tartini and sips away. Many argue the drink's name has made it stick in peoples' minds (and thus reach the hot spots on many a cocktail menu), but either way you look at it the drink is just damn delicious. Take some raspberry vodka (what more vodka I hear you cry?), and combine with some lime and cranberry juice before adding a splash of Chambord. Mix, shake, strain and serve. We'll order another please!
