Hurricane Suzy sits firmly in the tropical rum-cocktail tradition: big, fruity, and built for a tall glass with plenty of presence. You’ll recognise the “hurricane” styling in the pairing of light and dark rum with bright juices and a sunset hue, a format that channels mid-century tiki and vacation-bar drinks without needing a deep backstory. It’s the kind of modern, crowd-pleasing rum punch that leans into colour, aroma, and easy-drinking balance.
On the palate, white rum keeps things clean while dark rum adds a deeper, rounder rum note underneath. Passion fruit juice drives the flavour with its bold fruitiness, backed by orange juice for softer citrus sweetness. Lime juice tightens everything up with a sharp edge, while sugar syrup smooths the tart spots and helps the fruit feel fuller. Grenadine brings a pomegranate-like sweetness and a rosy finish that ties the citrus and passion fruit together.
Serve it in a hurricane glass when you want something festive and unapologetically juicy—poolside afternoons, summer parties, or any night you’re chasing holiday energy. You’ll love it if you’re into rum-forward drinks that still taste like fruit punch, and it’s a reliable choice when you want one cocktail that feels like an occasion all by itself.

Hurricane glass
Ingredients
Cocktail Colin says:
White rum and dark rum lead with a hefty molasses-and-cane punch, wrapped in passion fruit juice and orange juice, while lime juice adds a sharp snap and grenadine plus simple syrup push a bright red, candy-sweet finish. It works because the citrus acidity reins in the sugars and the two rums give depth under all that fruit; ideal for anyone who wants a bold, tropical, sweet-leaning tall drink.

FAQ's
What is the origin of the Hurricane Suzy cocktail?
The Hurricane Suzy cocktail does not have a specific, well-documented origin like some classic cocktails. It appears to be a variation of the traditional Hurricane cocktail, which originated in New Orleans. The original Hurricane cocktail was created in the 1940s at Pat O'Brien's bar. The Hurricane Suzy might be a modern twist on this classic, incorporating a unique combination of juices and rum to fit contemporary tastes.
Can I replace the white and dark rum with spiced rum in the Hurricane Suzy?
Yes, you can replace the white and dark rum with spiced rum in the Hurricane Suzy cocktail. Spiced rum will add a different flavor profile, with notes of vanilla, cinnamon, and other spices, which could complement the tropical and fruity flavors of the cocktail. However, be mindful that spiced rum might slightly alter the taste, making it different from the original recipe's intention.
What is the significance of the Hurricane glass in serving the Hurricane Suzy?
The Hurricane glass, with its distinctive bell shape and large capacity, is not only aesthetic but also functional. It is designed to showcase the vibrant colors of tropical cocktails like the Hurricane Suzy, while the wide brim enhances the aroma and flavor experience. Additionally, the large size accommodates plenty of ice along with the cocktail, keeping it chilled and diluting it slightly to balance the strong flavors and alcohol content.
Is there a non-alcoholic version of the Hurricane Suzy?
Yes, a non-alcoholic version of the Hurricane Suzy can be created by omitting the white and dark rum and replacing them with a non-alcoholic spirit that mimics the flavor of rum, or simply by increasing the quantities of the various juices. You might also add a little bit of almond syrup or a non-alcoholic bitter to give it more depth. This way, you can enjoy the tropical and fruity flavors of the cocktail without the alcohol.
What are some food pairings that go well with the Hurricane Suzy?
The Hurricane Suzy, with its tropical and fruity flavors, pairs well with a variety of foods. Seafood dishes, such as shrimp tacos or grilled fish, complement the cocktail's citrus and sweetness. Spicy foods, like jerk chicken or Thai cuisine, can balance the cocktail's sweetness with their heat. For a lighter option, fruit salads or appetizers that feature mango, pineapple, or avocado can enhance the cocktail's tropical vibe.
