FAQ's
Can I substitute any ingredients in the Frangipane Old Fashioned?
Yes, you can substitute ingredients in the Frangipane Old Fashioned to tailor it to your taste preferences or dietary needs. If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, you might consider using almond syrup in place of amaretto and a rich vanilla custard syrup instead of advocaat to maintain the dessert-like appeal. Additionally, if you don't have maple syrup, honey or simple syrup could be used as a sweetener, keeping in mind the difference in flavor profiles. Remember that substitutions can alter the flavor balance, so it's a good idea to adjust quantities to taste.
What is the best way to prepare the Frangipane Old Fashioned?
The Frangipane Old Fashioned is best prepared using the shaking method to fully integrate its rich and creamy flavors. Start by adding amaretto, advocaat, maple syrup, and angostura bitters into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds to chill the drink thoroughly, ensuring the ingredients are well-mixed. Strain the mixture into a lowball glass over fresh ice to maintain its coolness. This technique enhances the cocktail's texture, making it smooth and enjoyable with every sip.
What occasions is the Frangipane Old Fashioned suitable for?
The Frangipane Old Fashioned is an excellent choice for various special occasions and relaxed gatherings. Its distinct dessert-like qualities make it a perfect after-dinner drink to enjoy with friends or family during celebrations. It's particularly fitting for holiday gatherings due to its warming and comforting attributes. Additionally, its unique blend of flavors can intrigue cocktail enthusiasts at a tasting event or a themed cocktail party. Its nuanced taste also lends itself well to a quiet evening at home when you're in the mood for something sophisticated yet indulgent.
How does the alcohol content of the Frangipane Old Fashioned compare to other cocktails?
The Frangipane Old Fashioned has an alcohol content of 20.5%, which is relatively moderate compared to many classic cocktails. For comparison, a traditional Old Fashioned, which primarily uses whiskey, often has a higher alcohol content, typically around 30% or more, depending on the specific recipe and the proof of the whiskey used. The presence of amaretto and advocaat in the Frangipane Old Fashioned provides a lower alcohol content while still delivering a rich and flavorful profile. This makes it a more approachable option for those who prefer a slightly milder cocktail.
What foods pair well with the Frangipane Old Fashioned?
The Frangipane Old Fashioned pairs wonderfully with a variety of desserts and snacks. Its almond and maple notes complement sweet, nutty, and rich creamy desserts like almond biscotti, tiramisu, or crème brûlée. For savory pairings, consider serving it alongside cheese platters featuring mild to medium cheeses such as brie or gouda, which can balance and enhance the cocktail's flavors. Additionally, small bites such as prosciutto-wrapped figs or smoked almonds can offer delightful contrasts to the drink's sweet and complex profile, making for a well-rounded tasting experience.

Tasty cocktail. The toasted marshmallow as garnish is spot on. I increased the amounts to 2oz Amaretto, 1/2oz bourbon, and 1/4oz of maple syrup . I kept the bitters at 3 dashes.
