Mexican Mule is a tequila-led twist on the Mule template, swapping vodka for reposado to bring a warmer, more rounded base to the familiar lime-and-ginger highball. You’ll find it sits comfortably in modern bar culture as a crowd-pleasing variation: recognisable, refreshing, and easy to love if you want Mule brightness with a little extra character from agave.
On the palate, tequila reposado gives a smooth backbone that stands up to the snap of ginger beer. Lime juice adds clean, direct tartness, while sugar or simple syrup softens the edges and helps the citrus and ginger feel integrated rather than sharp. Expect a lively balance where the ginger beer’s spice and fizz lift everything, and the tequila remains present through the finish.
Serve it in a lowball or rocks glass when you want something long, brisk, and uncomplicated—ideal for warm evenings, casual get-togethers, or as a pre-dinner drink. It suits you if you like tequila but don’t want a heavy sipper, and it’s an easy pick for guests who enjoy a Moscow Mule style but prefer an agave-forward profile.

Ingredients
Cocktail Colin says:
Tequila reposado leads with warm, rounded agave, sharpened by lime juice and lightly sweetened by simple syrup, while ginger beer brings a bright, spicy fizz that lingers on the finish. The ginger beer’s heat and carbonation lift the reposado’s richness and keep the syrup from feeling cloying, making it ideal for mule fans who want more depth and tequila drinkers who like zesty refreshment.

FAQ's
What makes the Mexican Mule different from the classic Moscow Mule?
The primary difference between a Mexican Mule and a Moscow Mule lies in the choice of spirit. The Mexican Mule uses Tequila Reposado as its base spirit instead of the vodka used in a Moscow Mule. This change gives the Mexican Mule a richer, slightly smoky flavor profile distinct from the clean, crisp taste of the vodka-based Moscow Mule.
Can I use any type of tequila for a Mexican Mule?
While you can technically use any type of tequila for a Mexican Mule, it is traditionally made with Tequila Reposado because of its smooth, nuanced flavor that comes from aging in oak barrels. Reposado tequila adds depth and complexity to the drink that you wouldn't get from a Blanco (unaged) or an Añejo (longer-aged) tequila.
Is the Mexican Mule a strong cocktail?
The Mexican Mule has an alcohol content of approximately 13.71%, making it moderately strong. Its strength is similar to other mule cocktails but can vary slightly depending on the specific brands of ingredients used and any modifications to the recipe. However, the presence of ginger beer also makes it quite refreshing and balances the alcohol's potency.
What is the best way to serve a Mexican Mule?
A Mexican Mule is best served cold in a lowball glass, as suggested. To enhance its flavor and presentation, it can be garnished with a lime wedge or a slice of lime on the rim of the glass. Adding a few ice cubes or crushed ice will keep the drink cold and refreshing for longer, especially in warmer climates.
Can I prepare a Mexican Mule in advance for a party?
While you can mix the Tequila Reposado, lime juice, and sugar syrup in advance, it's best to add the ginger beer just before serving to preserve its carbonation and fizz. Pre-mixing the non-carbonated ingredients can save time for parties, but for the best taste and presentation, finalize each Mexican Mule individually by topping it off with fresh ginger beer and ice.
