In a documentary shown on British BBC TV about the situation comedy Dad's Army, one of the scriptwriters explained the following: The main character, Captain Mainwaring, was played by the actor Arthur Lowe (1915-1982). Each year the cast would film in the spring in a rural setting at Thetford, Norfolk, and when they had finished for the day most of the cast and crew would congregate in various bars in the village. The principal members of the cast stayed at The Bell Hotel in Thetford. Going into the hotel bar they would find Arthur Lowe, immaculately dressed and propping up the bar. He was "drinking an Amazon - gin and ginger ale, with one (not two) slice of cucumber".
