Named for the Pegu Club in Malaysia where it originated, apparently this was a big hit between the world wars at the Savoy Club in London. This is a gin drink for non-gin lovers.

The Pegu Club cocktail is a delightful nod to historical tastes with its sharp citrus twist from lime juice balanced elegantly against the botanical notes of gin and the sweet, complex flavors of orange liqueur. A dash of Angostura bitters adds a subtle spice that rounds out the drink, making it a refreshing yet sophisticated choice that could sway even those usually averse to gin.

I made this with Triple Sec instead of orange Curacao because we had none of the latter. It was pretty good.

Cointreau would work as well .... all subtly effecting the final flavour profile but all marrying up well with the other ingredients. Nice!

FAQ's

Origins history icon

What is the history or origin of the Pegu Club cocktail?

The Pegu Club cocktail is named after the Pegu Club in Burma (now Myanmar), where it was first concocted in the 1920s. The club was a British colonial officers' club in Rangoon, and the cocktail was originally designed as a refreshing drink to help the officers cool down in the tropical heat. It gained popularity among British expatriates and travelers, eventually becoming famous worldwide.

What type of gin is best for making a Pegu Club?

For making a Pegu Club, it's recommended to use a dry gin as the base spirit. London Dry Gin is a popular choice due to its crisp, clean taste and subtle botanicals, which combine well with the citrus and bitter notes of the cocktail. The choice of gin can vary based on personal preference, but the dry style is considered classic for this drink.

Can I use any type of orange liqueur in a Pegu Club?

Yes, you can use different types of orange liqueur in a Pegu Club. The most commonly recommended are Cointreau or Triple Sec, as they provide a nice balance of sweetness and orange flavour that complements the other ingredients. However, you can experiment with other orange liqueurs, like Grand Marnier for a slightly different flavor profile. The key is to choose a high-quality orange liqueur that matches the overall balance you’re looking for in your cocktail.

What is the significance of using Angostura Bitters in a Pegu Club?

Angostura Bitters play an essential role in the Pegu Club by adding depth and complexity to the cocktail. They contribute a blend of herbs, spices, and botanical flavors that enhance the other ingredients, especially the citrus and gin. The bitters also add a subtle aromatic element and a balancing bitterness that rounds out the sweetness of the orange liqueur and the acidity of the lime juice. It’s a small addition that makes a significant impact on the overall flavor.

How do I properly serve a Pegu Club cocktail?

A Pegu Club cocktail should be served cold, typically shaken with ice and then strained into a chilled cocktail glass. To properly serve a Pegu Club, first chill your cocktail glass in the freezer or by filling it with ice water while you prepare the drink. Shake the gin, orange liqueur, lime juice, and a dash of Angostura Bitters with ice in a shaker until well-chilled. Strain the mixture into the chilled cocktail glass. Optionally, you can garnish with a lime twist or wheel to emphasize the citrus aspects of the drink. Serving it properly chilled and elegantly presented is key to enjoying its refreshing and complex flavors.
