Rum Swizzle is a bright, island-style rum cocktail that sits in the swizzle family: long drinks built for refreshment, traditionally mixed to a lively chill and served over plenty of ice. While “swizzle” has deep Caribbean roots as a style, this version keeps the focus on a bold Jamaican rum base with a citrus-and-spice structure that feels made for warm weather sipping.
You’ll find Jamaican rum bringing rich, full-bodied character that stands up to the sharp snap of lime juice and the softer lift of lemon juice. Falernum layers in sweet spice, and that sweetness is reinforced and smoothed by simple syrup, rounding off the citrus edges without muting them. A dash of aromatic bitters ties everything together, adding a dry, fragrant accent that keeps the finish from tipping too sweet.
Serve it in a highball glass when you want something tall, cooling, and flavour-forward. It’s a great pick for rum lovers who enjoy citrus-driven drinks with a spiced twist, and it fits perfectly at barbecues, beach days, or any time you’re after an easygoing tropical mood without losing intensity.

Ingredients
Cocktail Colin says:
Jamaican rum leads with funky warmth, sharpened by lime juice and lemon juice, while falernum and simple syrup bring a spiced, rounded sweetness that the aromatic bitters tighten into a brisk finish. It works because the citrus snap keeps the sugars and falernum from feeling heavy, making it ideal for anyone who likes bright, long rum drinks with a sweet-spice edge.
Method
How to make a Rum Swizzle
- Jamaican rum 60ml, Lime juice 15ml, Falernum 20ml, Aromatic bitters 1 dash, Lemon juice 7.5ml, Sugar / simple syrup 15ml
-
- Begin by pouring the ingredients into a chilled glass, filling it up to two-thirds with crushed ice to ensure your drink stays cool
-
- Use a swizzle stick, but if you don't have one, a bar spoon is a great alternative, to mix the ingredients together, enhancing the flavors
-
- After the initial mix, top off the glass with more crushed ice to the brim, ensuring your drink remains cold longer, and give it another good swizzle to combine everything thoroughly
-
- Finally, add a straw or two for easy sipping, making it convenient and enjoyable to drink

FAQ's
What is the origin of the Rum Swizzle?
The Rum Swizzle is often referred to as Bermuda's national drink. The cocktail's history dates back to the 18th century and is associated with the Swizzle Inn, one of the oldest pubs on the island. The drink gained popularity for its refreshing taste and the unique method of 'swizzling' the ingredients together.
What makes a Rum Swizzle unique from other rum cocktails?
What sets the Rum Swizzle apart from other rum cocktails is its method of preparation, specifically the 'swizzling' technique used to thoroughly mix its ingredients. A 'swizzle stick,' traditionally made from the branch of the Quararibea turbinata tree, is rotated rapidly between the bartender's palms in the drink, creating a frothy and well-mixed cocktail. This unique mixing method, combined with its distinctive combination of ingredients like falernum and Angostura Bitters, gives the Rum Swizzle its unique flavor profile.
Can I use any type of rum for a Rum Swizzle?
While you can use different types of rum based on personal preference, the traditional Rum Swizzle recipe calls for Jamaican rum, known for its rich and slightly sweet flavor profile. Using Jamaican rum will give you a more authentic taste of the cocktail as originally intended. However, experimenting with different rums like white rum for a lighter taste or a dark rum for a deeper flavor can also be enjoyable.
Is there a non-alcoholic version of the Rum Swizzle?
Yes, you can create a non-alcoholic version of the Rum Swizzle by substituting the rum with a non-alcoholic spirit or even ginger ale to mimic the cocktail's bubbly and spicy profile. Replace the alcoholic components with equal parts of your non-alcoholic substitutes while keeping the rest of the ingredients the same. This way, everyone can enjoy a version of this refreshing drink.
What are some common foods to pair with a Rum Swizzle?
The Rum Swizzle, with its balanced sweet and tart flavors, pairs well with a variety of foods. Seafood dishes, especially those with a citrusy dressing, complement the drink's brightness. Spicy appetizers or grilled meats can also be balanced by the cocktail's sweetness. For a casual gathering, even simple snacks like nuts or chips can be a delight with the Rum Swizzle.
