First and Ten is a tall, fruit-forward highball that leans into a “kitchen-sink” citrus-and-juice style, built for easy drinking rather than strict tradition. With gin as the backbone and a dash of dark rum adding a subtle twist, it sits in that modern mixed-drink lane where bright juices, a splash of sweetness, and a fizzy finish do the heavy lifting. You’ll find it reads more like a lively party cooler than a spirit-sipping classic.

On the palate, gin’s crisp edge cuts through a dense mix of lime and lemon, while orange and pineapple bring rounded sweetness to soften the sharpness. Grapefruit and cranberry add a tart, slightly bitter-leaning snap that keeps the fruit from feeling flat, and a dash of grenadine nudges everything toward a sweeter, red-fruit finish. The dark rum sits in the background, deepening the overall fruit blend without taking over, and soda water lifts the whole drink into a lighter, more refreshing register.

Serve it when you want something long, bright, and crowd-pleasing—ideal for warm afternoons, game days, or any casual get-together. If you like citrusy drinks with lots of fruit complexity and a sparkling top, this one fits; if you prefer minimal, spirit-forward cocktails, expect it to feel more like a punchy highball.

Gin and a dash of dark rum ride under a flood of lime, lemon, grapefruit, orange, pineapple, and cranberry juices, with grenadine adding a soft red-fruit sweetness and soda water lifting everything into a bright, fizzy, tangy sip. It works because the bubbles lighten the heavy juice mix while the gin’s bite and rum’s depth keep it from tasting like straight punch; ideal for citrus lovers who want an easy, tall refresher.

FAQ's

Preparation techniques icon

How do you properly combine the multiple juices and alcoholic components in the First and Ten cocktail?

The First and Ten cocktail, being a shaken cocktail, requires you to add all the liquid ingredients including lime juice, pineapple juice, orange juice, cranberry juice, lemon juice, gin, dark rum, soda water, grenadine, and grapefruit juice into a shaker filled with ice. Shake well until the mixture is well chilled. Then, strain the mixture into a highball glass filled with ice, topping it up with soda water if needed. This method ensures a uniform and refreshing taste throughout.

Serving suggestions icon

What is the best way to serve the First and Ten to enhance its aesthetic appeal?

To enhance the aesthetic appeal of the First and Ten, use a highball glass for a tall and elegant presentation. Garnish with a slice of orange or a twist of citrus peel to add a pop of color and to complement the citrus flavors of the cocktail. A sprig of mint can also be added for an aromatic touch. Serving the cocktail with a colorful straw or a cocktail umbrella can further enhance its visual appeal and add a fun element to the presentation.

Alcohol content comparison icon

How does the alcohol content in the First and Ten compare to that of a standard cocktail?

The First and Ten cocktail has an alcohol content of 6%, which is relatively low compared to many standard cocktails that can range from 10% to 25% alcohol by volume (ABV). This makes the First and Ten a lighter option, ideal for those who prefer a cocktail with a lower alcohol concentration. Its refreshing mix of juices and a modest amount of gin and a dash of dark rum contribute to its lower alcohol content, making it suitable for social gatherings where guests prefer not to consume high-alcohol drinks.

Ingredient substitutions icon

Are there any substitutions for gin in the First and Ten for someone who doesn't enjoy gin?

For those who prefer not to use gin in the First and Ten cocktail, a good substitution would be vodka, as it is neutral in flavor and can blend well with the multiple juice components without altering the cocktail's character significantly. Another option could be tequila, for a slight twist and a more pronounced flavor that still harmonizes with the citrusy and fruity profile of the cocktail.

Dietary considerations icon

Is the First and Ten suitable for individuals following a gluten-free diet?

The First and Ten cocktail, primarily composed of fruit juices and alcohol, is generally suitable for individuals on a gluten-free diet. Most gins and rums are distilled from gluten-containing grains, but the distillation process typically removes gluten proteins, making them gluten-free. However, individuals with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity should verify the gluten-free status of the specific brands of gin and dark rum used in the cocktail to ensure they meet their dietary needs.
