Once dismissed as a saccharine relic of post-’50s cocktail folly, the Amaretto Sour lived in infamy as an over-sweet novelty. Jeffrey Morgenthaler refused to let it remain a punchline and reimagined the drink with a whiskey backbone and fresh ingredients.

By blending rich, almond-forward amaretto with cask-strength bourbon, Morgenthaler’s version gains depth and structure. A bright pour of fresh lemon juice cuts through the sweetness, while a touch of 2:1 simple syrup provides just enough balance.

A silky crown of egg white brings velvety texture, transforming the once-derided sour into a modern classic that marries nostalgia with bartending craft.

Cocktail Colin says:

5/5

The Jeffrey Morgenthaler Amaretto Sour expertly reinvents the classic by fusing the sweet, almond-forward profile of amaretto with the bold, warming embrace of cask-strength bourbon, creating an unexpectedly sophisticated duet. The fresh lemon juice slices through this sweet serenade with bright, zesty bravado, while a whisper of simple syrup harmonizes the ensemble. The egg white adds a luscious, velvety foam on top, turning texture into the unsung hero of this now-legendary composition. It's an elegant redemption arc for a cocktail once mistaken for overly sweet fluff, now a balanced dance of flavors that tiptoes between nostalgia and modern mixology mastery.

Use a cask-proof bourbon to ensure that the spirit's bold character isn't lost when combined with the sweet amaretto. This higher proof will add depth and complexity to the cocktail.
For the egg white, use the 'reverse dry shake' method. First, shake all ingredients with ice. Then, strain out the ice and shake again without ice to create a thicker, more luxurious foam.

FAQ's

Origins history icon

How did Jeffrey Morgenthaler transform the Amaretto Sour into a modern classic?

Jeffrey Morgenthaler reimagined the Amaretto Sour by infusing it with a richer structure and depth than its predecessors. Traditionally seen as overly sweet, Morgenthaler introduced a whiskey backbone by adding cask-strength bourbon, which provides a robust counterbalance to the almond-forward amaretto. The introduction of fresh lemon juice cuts through the sweetness, contributing a vital tangy freshness. By shaking the cocktail with egg white, it gains a silky, smooth texture that elevates the drink from a '70s novelty to a respected modern classic, celebrating nostalgia while embracing artisan bartending techniques. The result is a sophisticated cocktail that has garnered a 4.75/5 rating, indicating its high appreciation among enthusiasts.

Ingredient specifics icon

What role does egg white play in the Jeffrey Morgenthaler Amaretto Sour?

The egg white in the Jeffrey Morgenthaler Amaretto Sour is a crucial ingredient that contributes to the cocktail's luxurious texture. When shaken, the egg white emulsifies, adding a creamy, foamy layer to the drink, which is visually appealing and enhances mouthfeel. This velvety texture is essential in balancing the drink's bold flavors, softening the sharpness of the lemon juice and the strength of the bourbon. In addition, the egg white creates a smoother finish, making the cocktail feel well-rounded and complete. The use of egg white turns what might otherwise be a standard cocktail into a refined and elegant sipping experience.

Preparation techniques icon

Why is the Jeffrey Morgenthaler Amaretto Sour shaken and not stirred?

The decision to shake the Jeffrey Morgenthaler Amaretto Sour rather than stir it is rooted in the technique's ability to properly integrate its ingredients and develop the drink's signature texture. Shaking is necessary when using citrus ingredients, as it thoroughly mixes and balances the fresh lemon juice with the other components, ensuring a harmonious flavor profile. Moreover, shaking with egg white allows for the creation of a rich, frothy head, enhancing both the aesthetic and the consumption experience. The vigorous motion also helps to properly chill and dilute the cocktail, intensifying the flavors without overpowering them.

Dietary considerations icon

Are there any dietary concerns when consuming the Jeffrey Morgenthaler Amaretto Sour?

When considering dietary restrictions, it's important to note that the Jeffrey Morgenthaler Amaretto Sour contains egg white, which may pose concerns for individuals with egg allergies or those following a vegan diet. Additionally, the cocktail includes alcohol, specifically amaretto and bourbon, which should be taken into account for those avoiding alcohol due to health conditions, medications, or personal choices. The drink's sugar content, derived from simple syrup and the natural sugars in amaretto, is also a consideration for those monitoring their sugar intake. Always assess these factors in line with dietary needs and preferences before indulging.

Occasion suitability icon

What occasions is the Jeffrey Morgenthaler Amaretto Sour suitable for?

The Jeffrey Morgenthaler Amaretto Sour is a versatile cocktail that suits a wide range of occasions, thanks to its sophisticated flavor profile and elegant presentation. It works beautifully as a pre-dinner drink, helping to stimulate the appetite with its refreshing tartness and complex notes. The cocktail's balanced sweetness and striking creaminess make it equally fitting for celebratory events, such as weddings or cocktail parties, where it is sure to impress guests with its classic yet modern appeal. Due to its ability to pair well with various foods, this drink is also suitable for dinner gatherings or festive seasons, offering a nod to nostalgia while satisfying contemporary palates.
