Cocktail Colin says:
The Strawberry Caipirinha is a refreshing twist on the classic, with ripe strawberries accentuating the robust earthiness of cachaça and the zesty lime brightening the cocktail's overall profile. The blend of sweet and tart resonates beautifully here, creating a drink that's as enticing in its summer appeal as it is in delivering a flavorful punch that elegantly balances the natural sweetness of the strawberries with the palpable sharpness of lime.
Method
How to make a Strawberry Caipirinha
-
- Begin by slicing a lime in half lengthwise, then cutting one half into eight slim, half-moon slices
-
- Place these slices into a sturdy rocks glass
-
- Next, incorporate 3 bar spoons of powdered caster sugar or half an ounce of 2:1 sugar syrup into the glass and use a muddler to blend the lime and sugar together until the sugar starts to dissolve
-
- Introduce some strawberries to the glass and continue muddling to fully extract the juice from the fruits and ensure the sugar is completely dissolved
-
- Transfer the muddled mixture of fruit and sugar into a hi-ball glass, which should ideally hold around 10 ounces
-
- Swirl a dose of cachaça, previously chilled in the freezer, in the original rocks glass to pick up any remaining flavors, then pour it into the hi-ball glass with your muddled fruits and sugar
-
- Stir the mix to blend all the ingredients well
-
- Finally, gently crack four to five large ice cubes and add them to your drink
-
- Stir briefly before piling on a bit more ice, then serve the refreshingly chilled cocktail with a stirrer, but without a straw, for an enhanced sipping experience

FAQ's
What is Cachaça and how does it differ from rum?
Cachaça is a distilled spirit from Brazil made from fermented sugarcane juice. It is the key ingredient in a Caipirinha. While it shares similarities with rum, the primary difference lies in their base materials and distillation processes. Most rum is produced from molasses, a by-product of the sugar refining process, whereas cachaça is made directly from fresh sugarcane juice. This gives cachaça a fresher, more grassy flavor profile compared to rum.
Can I use a different fruit instead of strawberry in a Strawberry Caipirinha?
Yes, you can use different fruits to create variations of the traditional Caipirinha. While the classic recipe uses lime, incorporating other fruits like strawberry adds a unique twist. Other popular variants include using fruits like kiwi, grapefruit, or raspberry. Feel free to experiment with your favorite fruits to customize the flavor to your liking.
What is the best way to muddle the strawberries and lime for a Strawberry Caipirinha?
The best way to muddle strawberries and lime is to use a muddler in a sturdy glass. Start by slicing the lime into wedges and cutting the strawberries into halves. Place them in the glass with the sugar, then gently press down with the muddler and twist over the ingredients. The goal is to extract the lime juice and the essence of the strawberries without pulverizing them into a pulp. A gentle but firm muddle ensures the perfect blend of flavors.
Is there a non-alcoholic version of the Strawberry Caipirinha?
Yes, you can make a non-alcoholic version of the Strawberry Caipirinha, often called a 'Virgin Caipirinha.' Substitute the cachaça with a non-alcoholic spirit or simply use club soda or sparkling water for a refreshing twist. Follow the original recipe, replacing the alcohol with your chosen substitute, to enjoy a delightful mocktail version of this beverage.
How do I properly serve a Strawberry Caipirinha?
A Strawberry Caipirinha should be served cold in a highball glass. After muddling the strawberries, lime, and sugar, fill the glass with ice and pour the cachaça over it. Stir gently to combine and chill the mixture. Garnish with a strawberry or a lime wedge on the rim of the glass for a finishing touch. It's important to serve it immediately to enjoy its refreshing flavor at its best.
