Green Swizzle sits firmly in the swizzle-and-tiki-adjacent family: rum-forward, citrus-led, and built for a lively, aromatic hit. While it isn’t a widely documented classic with a single agreed origin story, it borrows the spirit of Caribbean swizzles—bright lime, layered sweetness, and a punchy backbone—then pushes things greener and more intense with mint and absinthe.
You’ll find overproof rum and white rum laying down a clean, high-energy base, with the overproof adding extra lift and heat. Falernum brings the main sweetness and spice-like richness, which softens the edge of the spirits and gives the drink body. Lime juice cuts straight through that sweetness with sharp acidity, keeping everything snappy. Creme de menthe adds a cool, minty sweetness that turns the profile vividly green, while a small measure of absinthe threads in a dry, herbal anise note that makes the finish feel longer and more complex.
Serve it in a lowball when you want something bold but refreshing—ideal for warm evenings, parties, or anytime you’d normally reach for a rum drink with extra attitude. If you like minty brightness, citrus snap, and a hint of herbal intrigue, this is a natural fit.

Lowball / rocks glass
Ingredients
Cocktail Colin says:
Overproof rum and white rum drive a hot, cane-forward core, while lime juice snaps bright against the rich spice-sweet falernum; crème de menthe adds a cool green lift and absinthe threads in sharp anise aromatics. It works because the lime acidity and rum heat keep the falernum and mint from turning cloying, making it ideal for tiki-leaning drinkers who like bold aromatics and a bracing, herbal finish.

FAQ's
What is the origin of the Green Swizzle cocktail?
The Green Swizzle cocktail is believed to have originated in the Caribbean, specifically in Bermuda, during the early 20th century. It is part of the 'Swizzle' family of cocktails, known for being mixed with a swizzle stick, which is a traditional Caribbean mixing tool.
Can I substitute another type of rum if I don't have overproof or white rum for the Green Swizzle?
Yes, while the original recipe calls for overproof and white rum to achieve a specific flavor and alcohol content, you can substitute with other types of rum. Dark rum can add a richer taste, though it will alter the traditional flavor profile. Keep in mind that substituting rums may also change the color and strength of the cocktail.
What does Falernum add to the Green Swizzle?
Falernum is a sweet syrup used in Caribbean and tropical drinks, containing flavors of almond, ginger, lime, and sometimes clove or allspice. In the Green Swizzle, falernum adds a complex sweetness and spiciness, enriching the drink's flavor profile and complementing the cocktail's other ingredients like lime juice and rums.
How important is the Absinthe in the Green Swizzle recipe?
Absinthe, known for its potent flavor profile and high alcohol content, plays a significant role in the Green Swizzle. Even though it's used in small quantities (5ml), it adds a distinct herbal note and complexity to the drink. Its presence is important for achieving the characteristic flavor of the cocktail, contributing to its uniqueness.
What is the best way to serve the Green Swizzle to enhance its flavors?
The Green Swizzle is best served cold in a lowball glass, as recommended. To enhance its flavors, fill the glass with crushed ice to chill the drink thoroughly without diluting it quickly. Additionally, garnishing with a lime wheel or mint leaves can add aromatic appeal. Remember, it's not shaken or stirred but traditionally swizzled to mix the ingredients while maintaining its texture and temperature.
