Cocktail Colin says:

5/5

Hat Trick delicately layers the bitterness of Aperol with the nutty dryness of sherry and a splash of effervescent Prosecco, resulting in a spirited cocktail that dances gracefully between sweet and bitter. Orange bitters add a citrusy sparkle that enhances the drink's refreshing, complex profile.

Method
How to make a Hat Trick

Serves 1 · Takes 3 minutes
Add the Aperol, sherry and two dashes of bitters into a cocktail shaker with ice

tried it just now. Nice balance of flavors, the sherry and the prosecco blend well. Aperol adds a good touch. Not too sweet, not too bitter. It’s refreshing, but make sure it's really cold. Enjoyed it but watch out, it’s stronger than it seems!

FAQ's

Preparation techniques icon

Is it necessary to shake the ingredients used in the Hat Trick cocktail?

While the Hat Trick cocktail specified preparation as 'shaken,' it's worth noting that this method helps to thoroughly mix the Aperol, dry sherry, and orange bitters, while effectively chilling the mixture. Since Champagne or prosecco is also an ingredient, it should be added after shaking to preserve its carbonation and gently stirred in, if at all, to integrate without losing too much fizz.

Serving suggestions icon

What is the ideal glassware for serving a Hat Trick cocktail?

The Hat Trick cocktail is best served in a Champagne glass, which enhances the presentation and ensures the perfect balance between maintaining the effervescence of the Champagne or prosecco and allowing the aromas of the Aperol and dry sherry to come through.

Ingredient substitutions icon

Can I substitute a different bitter for orange bitters in the Hat Trick cocktail?

Yes, you can substitute a different bitter for orange bitters in the Hat Trick cocktail, though it will slightly alter the taste profile. Angostura bitters or grapefruit bitters could provide an interesting twist, adding either a more herbal or citrusy note, respectively. It’s important to consider how the substitution might interact with the other ingredients, particularly the Aperol and dry sherry.

Alcohol content comparison icon

How does the alcohol content in a Hat Trick compare to other cocktails?

A Hat Trick cocktail has an alcohol content of 14%, which places it in the moderate range of cocktail strengths. It's stronger than light cocktails like a Mimosa (typically around 8-10% alcohol) but less potent than high-alcohol cocktails such as a Martini (which can exceed 20% alcohol content). It strikes a balance that makes it suitable for occasions where you desire a cocktail that’s neither too light nor overwhelmingly strong.

Food pairings icon

What foods pair well with the Hat Trick cocktail?

The Hat Trick, with its notes from orange bitters, Aperol, dry sherry, and Champagne or prosecco, pairs well with a variety of foods. Seafood dishes, particularly oysters and shrimp, can complement its crispness. Light pasta dishes or risottos with citrus or herb flavors can also enhance the cocktail’s complex profile. Cheeses, especially soft and creamy ones like brie or gorgonzola, are excellent choices too for an appetizer or a relaxed evening.
