When Fantasy and Cocktails Collide
I don’t mind admitting that I have read every single Harry Potter book. I have watched the films and even visited the Harry Potter Tour at the Warner Bros Studios in London. While we were there, we were able to sample the infamous Butterbeer, an incredibly sweet and sickly concoction that I was unable to finish!
Having said that, I would be very willing to taste the alcoholic version created by The Blind Pig bar in Soho. Named ‘Half A Pint O’ Buttah’, the Harry Potter-inspired cocktail is a delightful blend of Monkey Shoulder Scotch, Kamm & Sons, thyme, butterscotch, citrus, bitters and beer. The entire cocktail menu has been selected in order to provoke a nostalgic feeling in its visitors, with other drinks being inspired by Winnie the Pooh, the BFG and Alice in Wonderland.
It turns out that there are many cocktails around the world that have been inspired by major motion pictures. Of course, one cannot sip a dry martini (shaken not stirred) without making a flippant James Bond joke, but there are other beverages that have been created in homage to the bartender’s favourite film.
The Little Red Riding Hood is one such cocktail that was invented after the success of the film ‘Into The Woods’. A potent combination of Disaronno, vodka, strawberry liqueur and prosecco, this red juice will make you forget all about Grandma and the Big Bad Wolf!
The God of Thunder cocktail was created after the film ‘Avengers’ was released. Made in homage to the mighty power of Thor, this mix of vodka, mead and berry liqueur was made with the express intention of getting the drinker ‘hammered’.
Fans of the cult-film franchise ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ might like to try the Dead Man’s Chest cocktail as created by mixologists at the Spur and Tavern Law in Seattle. Ingredients include Flor de Cana 4 Year-Old Gold, Fernet Branca, lemon juice, pineapple juice, falernum, Tasmanian peppercorn syrup and 6 dashes of Angostura Bitters. A hearty drink that any pirate would adore!
Meanwhile, the Star Wars franchise provoked a whole range of different cocktails, but our favourite has to be the Wookie Juice cocktail. Made with Blue Curacao, pineapple juice, and three different types of rum. The force is sure to be with you after drinking a few of these!
However, the Lord of the Rings franchise had a whole pub dedicated to it, with 13 different cocktails inspired by The Hobbit. The Frodo is a mix of vodka, peach schnapps, cranberry juice and lemonade, for a simple but delicious drink that is fit for a hobbit!
So next time you sit down to watch any of these classic films, make sure you have the appropriate cocktail handy!
