What’s the happy middle ground between a coffee and a dinner date? It’s a cocktail date! Not as mundane and boring as a quick meet-up in the coffee shop, but also not as big of a commitment as a full dinner.

We've been sleeping on happy hour cocktail dates with Flure, and it’s time to bring them back! Here’s how and why.

The Classic First-Date Cocktail – A Timeless Tradition

A first date cocktail is a genius idea for several reasons.

  • A little bit of alcohol eases the nerves and helps us be more natural during those first conversations.
  • Cocktail-serving establishments usually provide an intimate and playful atmosphere with dimmed lights, music, and sensual decor. Perfect background for a romantic date!
  • Having a drink implies taking your time and not rushing, something that we’re all guilty of, helping set the right intentions from the start.
  • Cocktail bars for first dates are low-pressure and sociable. You’re free to roam around the room, instead of being stuck at a table, and you can interact with the barmen and other guests without it being weird.

Cocktail Order as an Insight Into Someone’s Personality

Seeing what your date picks from the menu can tell you a lot about them.

Don’t read too much into it, but the cocktail choice can hint you at what kind of character they have, whether they’re confident or not, and even what their dating intentions are. For example, if your date enjoys margaritas, there’s a good chance that they are adventurous and spontaneous, and someone who goes for wine is more sophisticated and romantic.

Of course, you should be careful with judging a book by its drinking habits. A guy ordering whiskey neat can be a confident and traditional man, a pretentious snob, or a boring person with no imagination. See, those are three different people, all ordering this one drink.

Use their drinking habits as a part of your natural date observation process and bring it up as a conversation starter.

Chemistry Over Cocktails – Do Drinks Really Make a Difference?

Alcohol is essentially a legal drug. Consuming it means accepting that your mind and body will feel and act differently. When tipsy or drunk, people tend to change in terms of how they react to people around them. If you’re on a date and you’re drinking, this will influence how you feel about the person, whether you’re confident or not, and the kind of first impression that you leave.

The Fine Line Between Liquid Courage and Miscommunication

When you go on dates that involve alcohol, you ought to be careful. Whether we admit it or not, alcohol does influence us. One or two drinks – and you transform from a shy bunny into the soul of the party. Three to four drinks and you become a bit too racy and audacious with your jokes and comments. Five drinks and more, and you’re full-on misreading signals and saying and doing things you’re going to regret tomorrow.

And it’s okay if you only embarrass yourself in some way, but what if you have one too many and make your date uncomfortable? Tone, intent, and attraction can all be lost somewhere and drown in the drink, so it’s critical to pace yourself and drink water in between the cocktails.

Watch out for these potential downsides of consuming cocktails on a date:

  1. Blurring your judgment and coming to wrong conclusions
  2. Some red flags that will be invisible or less noticeable
  3. False confidence that will lead to to embarrassment and miscommunication
  4. Imbalance in energy and engagement if one of you drinks faster than the other
  5. Dependence on cocktails to have a good time and feel the connection

Flure’s Approach – Dating Beyond the Bar Scene

Modern dating culture can be too fast-paced and borderline toxic, and adding drinks to the mix can make things worse if you’re not careful.

At Flure, you’re not matched with someone on a surface level and immediately sent off for first-date drinks. Instead, the platform scans all profiles and aligns people who match on deeper levels, such as their values, vibes, and interests, rather than simply age and location.

Cocktail & Date Pairings – The Perfect Match?

A well-paired glass of wine will release a whole new set of flavors into the dish. A good cocktail will similarly elevate your date.

If you’re looking for the best cocktails for dating, here are some of the tried-and-tested options, paired for different types of dates.

  • Espresso martini calls for a stylish rooftop date with trendy music, fresh warm air in your hair, and colorful outfits.
  • Margarita is a great choice for a relaxed after-work catch-up or a casual weekend date when the weather is fine, and you can enjoy the drinks outside on a terrace.
  • Negroni would be an excellent choice for cocktail breaks after an artsy date when you go to an art gallery or a performance show.
  • Whiskey sour goes well with jazz clubs and century-old dark wood furniture.
  • Aperol Spritz is a very summery drink that is best enjoyed out on street cafes, ideally located on pedestrian streets where you can people-watch and get slightly tanned.
  • Red wine will be the ultimate pairing for a petite bar in a trendy part of the city.

The most important rule of pairing cocktails with dates: go for what feels right.

The tips and recommendations we shared are valid and good, but if you want to get a drink that seems kind of out of place – go for it! You can consume and enjoy whatever you want, whenever you want.

What’s the Verdict? Can a Cocktail Lead to Love?

A couple of delicious, well-made cocktails will help set the mood and make your date more fun and enjoyable, but they won’t replace true connection and genuine compatibility.

Drinks will help you ease up, and they will spark chemistry, but unless you and your date are truly on the same page, no matter how many exquisite cocktails you consume, you won’t be able to cover up for it.

True love stems from authenticity, alignment in values, mutual respect, and the ability to connect sober just as well, if not better, than with a drink in hand. Meaningful dating where you focus on shared interests and communication is the key to high-quality mindful romance.

Bartender's top tip

Creating your own syrups and infusions can dramatically elevate your cocktails. Homemade simple syrup is just the start; you can infuse it with flavors like vanilla, herbs, spices, or even chili to add a unique twist to your drinks. Infusing spirits with fruits, herbs, or spices can also create personalized and complex flavors that you can’t buy off the shelf.
