Lynchburg Lemonade is a whiskey-based long drink that sits in the same easygoing family as a Collins-style cooler: citrusy, lightly sweet, and built for relaxed sipping. While it’s widely associated with American whiskey culture and bar-friendly “lemonade” cocktails, you’ll mostly find it enjoyed as a modern crowd-pleaser rather than a drink with one definitive, well-documented origin story. What matters is the vibe—bright, tall, and designed to make whiskey feel instantly approachable.
On the palate, the whiskey brings a warm backbone that keeps the drink from tasting like simple soda. Triple sec adds a clear orange sweetness that softens the sharp edges of the sour mix, while the sour mix pushes the citrus tang forward. Topped with lemonade, everything lifts: the sweetness stretches out, the acidity stays refreshing, and the finish lands clean and zesty with whiskey still peeking through.
You’ll reach for this when you want something sessionable and sociable—great for parties, BBQs, and warm afternoons when a straight whiskey drink feels too heavy. It suits you if you like citrus-forward cocktails, or if you’re easing into whiskey and want a tall, sparkling-style serve that stays bright from first sip to last.

Cocktail Colin says:
Whiskey leads with a warm backbone while triple sec adds bright orange sweetness, and the sour mix brings a sharp, tangy bite that’s stretched into a fizzy, lemony finish by the lemonade top-up. It works because the lemonade and sour mix lift and dilute the whiskey’s heft while triple sec rounds the edges, ideal for anyone who likes citrus-forward, easy highballs.

FAQ's
What is the history of Lynchburg Lemonade?
Lynchburg Lemonade was created by a restaurant owner named Tony Mason in the 1980s, who later sued Jack Daniel's whiskey for using his creation without permission. Although the legal battle was contentious, the cocktail has become associated with Jack Daniel's due to the case and its Tennessee roots. The cocktail's name derives from Lynchburg, Tennessee, the hometown of the Jack Daniel's distillery.
Can I use any type of whiskey for Lynchburg Lemonade?
While traditionally made with Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey, reflecting its origin, you can use other types of whiskey according to your preference or availability. However, using Jack Daniel's maintains the cocktail's original flavor profile.
What is the best way to serve Lynchburg Lemonade?
Lynchburg Lemonade is best served cold over ice in a highball glass. Fill the glass with ice, add the whiskey, triple sec, sour mix, and then top it up with lemonade. Gently stir before serving to ensure it's well mixed. Garnishing with a lemon slice or a maraschino cherry can add a decorative touch.
What food pairs well with Lynchburg Lemonade?
Lynchburg Lemonade pairs well with barbecue dishes, smoked meats, and summer salads. Its refreshing citrus flavor complements spicy and smoky flavors, making it a great choice for outdoor gatherings, picnics, or barbecue parties.
Is there a non-alcoholic version of Lynchburg Lemonade?
Yes, a non-alcoholic version can be made by substituting the whiskey with a non-alcoholic spirit or more lemonade. The triple sec can also be replaced with a non-alcoholic orange liqueur or orange juice to maintain the citrusy flavor profile. This version still offers a refreshing taste, suitable for all ages.
