Aperol Fizz sits in the “fizz” family: a bright, citrus-led sour lengthened with soda and given a silky head from egg white. While Aperol itself is a modern Italian aperitivo staple, this particular combination reads more like a contemporary, home-bar twist on the classic fizz template than a drink with a single, well-documented origin story. What you get is an easygoing aperitif-style cocktail that feels both playful and polished in a whisky glass.
You’ll find Aperol’s bittersweet orange character at the centre, with lemon juice bringing a firm, clean tartness that keeps everything snappy. Simple syrup smooths the edges, rounding the citrus and helping the Aperol’s gentle bitterness feel more plush than sharp. Egg white adds a soft, creamy texture and a foamy cap that makes the drink taste lighter and more integrated, while a dash of soda water lifts the whole profile and keeps it refreshing.
Serve this when you want something zesty and lightly bitter without going fully spirit-forward—ideal as a pre-dinner opener or a sunny, early-evening pour. It suits you if you like sours but want a softer mouthfeel and a touch of aperitivo bitterness. Expect it to please fans of citrus cocktails who also enjoy a little grown-up, orange-tinged bite.

Cocktail Colin says:
Aperol leads with bittersweet orange and herbal notes, brightened by lemon’s sharp acidity and rounded by simple syrup, while egg white adds a creamy, meringue-like texture and soda water lifts everything into a light, foamy sip. It works because the lemon and Aperol’s bitterness keep the sugar in check as the egg white softens the edges; ideal for sour lovers who want a gentler, aromatic aperitivo.

FAQ's
How do I correctly shake the Aperol Fizz to ensure a smooth texture?
To ensure a smooth texture for the Aperol Fizz, fill a shaker with ice cubes, add the Aperol, lemon juice, sugar syrup, and egg white. Shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds. This action emulsifies the egg white, creating a smooth and frothy texture. Strain into a whisky glass filled with ice and top with a dash of soda water.
What garnish would complement the Aperol Fizz when serving?
A slice of orange or a twist of orange peel makes an excellent garnish for the Aperol Fizz. The citrus notes of the orange complement the bitter-sweet flavor of the Aperol, enhancing the overall drinking experience.
How does the alcohol content of Aperol Fizz compare to other classic cocktails?
With an alcohol content of 6.26%, the Aperol Fizz is considered to have a lower alcohol content compared to many classic cocktails. For comparison, classics like the Margarita and Martini often range from 20-30% ABV. The Aperol Fizz is a lighter option, making it suitable for occasions where you prefer a less potent drink.
Can I substitute the egg white in an Aperol Fizz, and if so, with what?
Yes, you can substitute the egg white in an Aperol Fizz for a vegan-friendly option like aquafaba, which is the liquid from canned chickpeas. Use about 30ml of aquafaba as a direct replacement for egg white to create a similar frothy texture and smooth mouthfeel without using animal products.
What food pairings would go well with an Aperol Fizz?
The Aperol Fizz, with its bitter-sweet flavor profile and lightness, pairs well with light appetizers and seafood dishes. Consider serving it with bruschetta, calamari, or a simple arugula and parmesan salad. The refreshing quality of the cocktail makes it an excellent complement to the saltiness and richness of these dishes.
