Waltzing Matilda is a bright, easy-drinking gin highball built for refreshment rather than ceremony. With a classic dry gin base and a simple lengthener, it sits in that modern “quick mixed” family of cocktails you’ll find at parties and casual bars—spirit-forward enough to taste the gin, but relaxed and sessionable thanks to the fizz. Any deeper origin story is hard to pin down, so it’s best thought of as a contemporary, fruit-led cooler with a citrus accent.
On the palate, dry gin brings crisp botanical bite, while a teaspoon of orange liqueur adds a small but noticeable lift of sweet orange that smooths the edges. Ginger ale tops everything up with gentle spice and sparkle, keeping the drink light. Passion fruit is the star: its tropical tang and aromatic pulp cut through the sweetness and play neatly against the gin’s dryness, giving you a juicy, zesty finish.
Serve it in a lowball when you want something breezy but not bland—ideal for warm afternoons, backyard catch-ups, or as a crowd-pleasing pre-dinner drink. If you like gin and tonic-style refreshers but want more fruit character, this is right in your lane.

Ingredients
Cocktail Colin says:
Dry gin leads with crisp botanicals, lifted by a teaspoon of orange liqueur’s sweet citrus, while passion fruit brings tangy tropical pulp and ginger ale tops it with fizzy spice and light sweetness. The ginger ale’s bite and bubbles keep the orange liqueur from feeling cloying and make the passion fruit pop; it’s ideal for gin drinkers who want an easy, fruity refresher.

FAQ's
What is the ideal setting to enjoy a Waltzing Matilda cocktail?
The Waltzing Matilda cocktail, with its bright and refreshing blend of orange liqueur, ginger ale, dry gin, and passion fruit, is perfect for warm, sunny days. It's ideally enjoyed at summer garden parties, relaxed backyard gatherings, or as a cooling refreshment on a sunny beach day. Its light alcohol content makes it an excellent daytime drink.
Can the Waltzing Matilda cocktail be made non-alcoholic?
Yes, a non-alcoholic version of the Waltzing Matilda can easily be created by substituting the dry gin with a non-alcoholic spirit or more ginger ale, and the orange liqueur with a non-alcoholic orange extract or syrup. The passion fruit and ginger ale still provide its signature tropical and refreshing taste.
What are the best food pairings with a Waltzing Matilda?
The Waltzing Matilda pairs well with light and tropical-inspired dishes. Seafood, especially grilled or chilled, tropical fruit salads, and light appetizers like ceviche or chicken skewers accentuate the cocktail's refreshing qualities. Its citrus and passion fruit flavors also complement desserts like lemon tarts or passion fruit sorbet.
How does the alcohol content of a Waltzing Matilda compare to other cocktails?
With an alcohol content of 3.64%, the Waltzing Matilda is considered a lighter cocktail, making it more accessible for extended sipping over social occasions. Compared to other cocktails which can range from 10% to 40% alcohol by volume, the Waltzing Matilda is on the lower end, catering to those preferring a more moderate alcohol intake.
Is the Waltzing Matilda suitable for all seasons, or is it more of a seasonal drink?
While its ingredients and refreshing nature suggest the Waltzing Matilda is best suited for warmer seasons like spring and summer, its vibrant flavors can also bring a touch of brightness to colder seasons. For winter or fall, the ginger ale and orange liqueur can provide a warming effect, making it versatile enough for enjoyment year-round.
