Method
How to make a Cast Away
-
- First take your slice of lemon and lightly run it around the rim of your cocktail glass
-
- Then ensure the sugar is in a flat-based bowl and dip the rim of the glass into the sugar to create an 'frosted' effect
-
- Now place a scoop of ice in the glass and add Bacardi and Malibu
-
- Then pour in roughly a cap full of cherry vodka, which should settle at the bottom
-
- Gently tip the cocktail glass at a slight angle and pour the pineapple juice in, taking care not to hit the sugar or stir up the mix too much
-
- To garnish, take the slice of pineapple and the strawberry half and carefully wedge them onto the side of the glass
-
- Lastly, drop a sprig of mint in the centre of the glass, add a straw and serve

FAQ's
What is the recommended way to serve the Cast Away cocktail?
The Cast Away cocktail is best served cold in a cocktail glass. To enhance its presentation, you can chill the glass before serving to keep the drink colder for longer, ensuring a refreshing experience.
Can I substitute a different type of rum if I don't have coconut or white rum for the Cast Away cocktail?
Yes, you can substitute other types of rum if you don't have coconut or white rum. However, be mindful that the flavor profile will change. Spiced rum could add a warming note, while aged rum could contribute a deeper, more complex flavor. Just remember that the unique tropical taste comes significantly from the coconut rum.
What are some recommended garnishes for the Cast Away cocktail?
For the Cast Away cocktail, a slice of lemon is already recommended. To further enhance its tropical theme, consider adding a pineapple wedge or leaf, and perhaps a maraschino cherry for a pop of color and sweetness. These garnishes not only add to the visual appeal but also complement the drink’s fruity flavors.
How does the alcohol content of the Cast Away compare to other popular cocktails?
The Cast Away has an alcohol content of 18.67%, which places it on the moderate to high side compared to many popular cocktails. For example, a classic Margarita typically has an alcohol content around 13-15%, while a Long Island Iced Tea can be over 22%. This means the Cast Away offers a relatively strong option, suitable for those looking for something a bit potent but not as strong as the most alcoholic cocktails.
What types of occasions are best suited for serving the Cast Away cocktail?
Given its tropical flavor profile and refreshing nature, the Cast Away cocktail is particularly suited for summer gatherings, beach parties, or any festive occasion where a light, fruity drink would be appreciated. Its vibrant presentation and refreshing taste make it a perfect choice for celebrations or simply enjoying a relaxing day in the sun.
