The Scotch Sour is a whisky sour built specifically around Scotch, giving you a classic balance of spirit, citrus, and sweetness with a distinctly whisky-forward edge. Sours are one of the oldest, most enduring cocktail families, prized for their simple, reliable structure and their ability to showcase a base spirit without burying it. With Scotch in the lead, you get a variation that feels familiar if you love a Whiskey Sour, but with a different accent and a slightly more robust character.
You’ll find the whisky’s depth sits at the centre, while lemon juice brings a clean, bright tartness that snaps the drink into focus. Sugar or simple syrup smooths the lemon’s sharpness and rounds the whisky so it tastes fuller rather than fiery. Egg adds a soft, creamy texture and a gentle richness that makes the sweet-and-sour contrast feel more integrated and luxurious on the palate.
Serve it when you want something refreshing but still spirit-led—ideal as an early-evening aperitif or a relaxed nightcap that doesn’t feel heavy. It suits whisky drinkers who enjoy citrus, and it’s also a friendly bridge for anyone easing into Scotch, since the lemon and sugar keep things approachable. Expect it to shine at casual get-togethers where you want a polished, classic-style drink in a rocks glass.

Cocktail Colin says:
Whiskey leads with a malty, warming core, while lemon juice snaps bright and tart against the sugar/simple syrup’s rounded sweetness, all wrapped in a silky, foamy cushion from the egg. The egg softens the lemon’s bite and lets the whiskey stay bold without turning harsh, making it ideal for sour lovers who want a spirit-forward, velvety drink.

How to make a Scotch Sour
- Whiskey 60ml, Lemon juice 25ml, Sugar / simple syrup 15ml, Egg 15ml
-
- Start by combining all the ingredients in a shaker filled with ice and give it a good shake for about 10-15 seconds, or until the shaker feels cold to the touch
-
- Next, strain the mixture back into the shaker, but this time without any ice, and give it another shake - this is your 'dry shake' to really integrate the mix
-
- After your dry shake, strain the cocktail into a glass filled with fresh ice to keep it cool and well-diluted

FAQ's
What makes the Scotch Sour different from other sour cocktails?
The primary difference lies in the use of whiskey, specifically Scotch whiskey, which imparts a distinct smoky flavor that sets it apart from other sour cocktails that may use different types of alcohol like gin, vodka, or bourbon. Additionally, the combination of lemon juice and sugar syrup complements the rich and complex flavors of Scotch, creating a balanced and refreshing drink.
Can I substitute the egg in the recipe, and if so, with what?
Yes, you can substitute the egg in the Scotch Sour to cater to dietary preferences or allergies. A common alternative is aquafaba, the liquid from a can of chickpeas, which is used in similar proportions (about 15ml). Aquafaba mimics the frothy texture provided by the egg white, making it a popular choice for vegan versions of this cocktail.
How do I properly serve a Scotch Sour?
A Scotch Sour is best served in a lowball glass, chilled. First, shake the ingredients with ice to properly mix and chill them. Then, strain the cocktail into the glass. Garnishing with a slice of orange or a cherry can add a touch of elegance and a hint of additional flavor, though it’s optional. Serving immediately ensures the drink remains cold and refreshing.
What is the best type of Scotch to use for a Scotch Sour?
While personal preference plays a significant role in choosing the Scotch, a blended Scotch whisky is commonly recommended for crafting a Scotch Sour. Blended Scotch tends to have a balanced flavor profile that mixes well with the sourness of the lemon and the sweetness of the sugar syrup. However, for those who enjoy the unique characteristics of single malt Scotch, choosing a lighter, less peaty variety can also yield delicious results.
Is the Scotch Sour suitable for all seasons or is it specific to one?
The Scotch Sour is a versatile cocktail that can be enjoyed all year round. Its refreshing quality makes it particularly enjoyable during the warmer months, while the rich, smoky flavor profile of the Scotch whisky provides a comforting warmth during the cooler months. Essentially, it's a drink that can be tailored to suit any season by adjusting the garnish or presentation.
