FAQ's
What is the origin of Canelazo?
Canelazo is a traditional hot alcoholic beverage from the Andean highlands, especially popular in countries like Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru. It is traditionally consumed during cold weather and festive events, such as local festivities and Christmas.
What is the best way to serve Canelazo?
Canelazo is best served in a lowball glass to maintain its warmth. It is traditionally served hot, making it an ideal drink for cold evenings or winter nights. The warmth of the drink is part of its charm and appeal.
Can I substitute Aguardiente in Canelazo with another type of alcohol?
Yes, if Aguardiente is not available, you can substitute it with other clear spirits like rum or vodka. However, Aguardiente, which is a sugar cane-based liquor, adds a unique flavor that is characteristic of a traditional Canelazo.
How do you traditionally prepare Canelazo?
To prepare Canelazo, you typically boil water with cinnamon sticks to create a flavorful base. Then, sugar is dissolved into this mixture. Afterward, the Aguardiente is added. The drink is heated until it is warm but not boiling to preserve the alcohol content. It's then ready to serve.
When is the best time or occasion to enjoy Canelazo?
Canelazo is especially suited for cold weather or high-altitude locations where its warmth is most appreciated. It's also a popular choice during festive events, like Christmas, local festivities in the Andean regions, and gatherings among friends and family.
