Italian American is a bourbon-led sour that nods to an Old Fashioned sensibility while leaning into liqueur-driven character. It isn’t a widely codified classic with a single, well-known origin story, but it fits neatly into modern bar-era naming: a familiar base spirit given a clear cultural cue through a signature modifier. Here, that cue is Frangelico, bringing an Italian accent to an unmistakably American whiskey backbone.

You’ll find bourbon’s vanilla-leaning warmth at the center, with Frangelico adding a sweet, nutty layer that sits right on top of the whiskey rather than fighting it. Lemon juice cuts through both, sharpening the drink into a bright, structured sour, while simple syrup smooths the edges so the citrus doesn’t feel too pointed. A dash of Peychaud’s Aromatic Bitters ties it together with a fragrant, lightly spiced lift that keeps the finish from turning purely sweet.

Serve it in a brandy glass when you want something that feels a touch more plush and contemplative than a standard whiskey sour. It’s a great pick for bourbon drinkers who like a hint of sweetness and aroma, and it suits early evening sipping, dinner parties, or any moment you want a citrusy whiskey drink with a slightly dessert-leaning twist.

4/5

Bourbon leads with warm oak and vanilla, while Frangelico adds hazelnut sweetness that rounds into simple syrup; lemon juice snaps the mid-palate bright and tart, and a dash of Peychaud’s aromatic bitters brings anise-tinged spice over the whiskey teaspoon’s extra bite. It works because the citrus acidity reins in the liqueur and syrup, letting bitters stitch nutty and whiskey notes together—ideal for bourbon-sour fans who want a richer, dessert-leaning edge without losing structure.

FAQ's

Preparation techniques icon

How do you properly shake the Italian American cocktail?

To properly shake the Italian American cocktail, first fill a shaker with ice, then add the lemon juice, sugar syrup, Frangelico, whiskey, bourbon, and Peychaud's Aromatic Bitters. Secure the lid or shaker tin on top and shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. This ensures that the ingredients are well mixed, chilled, and slightly diluted, enhancing the flavors.

Serving suggestions icon

What is the best way to serve the Italian American cocktail?

The Italian American cocktail is best served in a brandy glass. After shaking the ingredients with ice, strain the mixture into the glass. You can serve it with a large ice cube or neat, depending on preference. This presentation not only looks elegant but also concentrates the aromas, enhancing the drinking experience.

Ingredient substitutions icon

Can I use a different type of bitters if I don't have Peychaud's Aromatic Bitters?

Yes, if you do not have Peychaud's Aromatic Bitters, you can substitute it with Angostura bitters or orange bitters for a slightly different flavor profile. While the unique taste of Peychaud's is recommended for the Italian American cocktail, these substitutions can still create a delicious and balanced drink.

Customization ideas icon

How can I make the Italian American cocktail sweeter or less sweet?

To adjust the sweetness of the Italian American cocktail, you can vary the amount of sugar syrup. For a sweeter drink, increase the sugar syrup slightly. To make it less sweet, reduce the amount of sugar syrup or increase the amount of lemon juice for a more tart profile. Adjusting in small increments is key to finding your perfect balance.

Alcohol content comparison icon

How does the alcohol content of the Italian American compare to other classic cocktails?

The Italian American has an alcohol content of 26.13%, making it moderately strong compared to other classic cocktails. For example, a classic Margarita typically has an alcohol content around 26% to 30%, while a Manhattan has about 32% alcohol content. This places the Italian American in a similar range, offering a balanced and enjoyable drinking experience without being overly potent.
