Tropical Sunset sits firmly in the modern “tropical highball” camp: a tall, fruit-forward mix built for easy sipping and big, sunny flavours rather than a storied back-bar pedigree. With multiple rums alongside vodka, it leans into that holiday-cocktail tradition of blending light spirits with bright juice and a splash of colour for instant escapism. You’ll recognise the vibe from beach-bar classics, even if this particular combination doesn’t have a widely documented origin story.
On the palate, coconut rum brings a sweet, creamy coconut note that softens the sharper edges of the 60ml vodka. White rum adds a clean, lightly sweet lift, while orange juice provides the main body—juicy, bright, and refreshing. Passion fruit syrup layers in a tangy tropical sweetness that deepens the fruit character, and grenadine contributes a richer red-fruit sweetness that rounds everything out and gives the drink its sunset-like finish.
Serve it in a highball when you want something crowd-pleasing and unapologetically tropical—poolside, at a barbecue, or as a party starter that doesn’t demand a “cocktail palate.” If you like sweet-fruity drinks with a smooth, spirited backbone, this is right in your lane.

Highball glass
Ingredients
Cocktail Colin says:
Coconut rum and white rum ride alongside vodka for a clean, boozy backbone, while orange juice floods the glass with bright citrus, passion fruit syrup adds tangy tropical depth, and grenadine lays in a glossy, candy-red sweetness. It works because the vodka’s neutrality lets the rums and fruit shine, and the orange juice keeps the syrups from feeling too heavy—ideal for sweet-tooth sippers who want an easy, sunny highball.

FAQ's
Can I substitute Passion fruit syrup with something else in the Tropical Sunset cocktail?
Yes, you can substitute passion fruit syrup with mango syrup or peach syrup for a slightly different, but still tropical, flavor profile. These substitutions will maintain the cocktail's sweet and fruity essence.
What are some garnishing tips for the Tropical Sunset cocktail?
A slice of orange or a twist of orange peel makes an excellent garnish for the Tropical Sunset cocktail, adding a pop of color and enhancing its tropical theme. Additionally, a maraschino cherry or a small skewer of pineapple chunks can also complement the drink's visual appeal and flavor.
Should the Tropical Sunset cocktail be shaken or stirred?
The Tropical Sunset cocktail should be shaken. Shaking helps to thoroughly mix the diverse ingredients, especially the syrup and juice, to create a smoothly integrated flavor and a slightly frothy texture that enhances the drinking experience.
What is the best way to serve the Tropical Sunset cocktail?
The Tropical Sunset cocktail is best served in a highball glass over ice. This serving method ensures that the cocktail remains cold and diluted at a pleasant rate as the ice slowly melts, enhancing its refreshing qualities. For an extra tropical touch, consider rimming the glass with sugar or fine salt.
How does the alcohol content in the Tropical Sunset compare to other popular cocktails?
With an alcohol content of 16.47%, the Tropical Sunset cocktail is moderately strong. It's less potent than classic cocktails like a Margarita (about 33%) or a Martini (about 32%), but stronger than lighter cocktails such as a Mimosa (around 10%). It offers a balanced option for those who enjoy flavorful cocktails without the heaviness of higher alcohol content.
