The Blue Frozen Margarita is a playful, colour-forward twist on the Margarita family, taking the familiar tequila-and-lime backbone and giving it a vivid blue hue. While the Margarita itself is a well-known tequila sour with plenty of lore around its beginnings, this frozen, blue-tinged variation is more about modern bar fun than a single definitive origin story. You’ll find it sits firmly in the crowd-pleasing, vacation-style corner of tequila cocktails—bold, bright, and built to refresh.
On the palate, tequila blanco brings clean agave bite and a dry edge that keeps the drink from drifting too sweet. Blue curaçao adds a citrusy orange sweetness that rounds out the sharpness of the lime juice, while the lime keeps everything snappy and mouthwatering. A pinch of salt subtly lifts the citrus and makes the tequila taste fuller, tightening the balance between sweet and tart.
Serve this when you want something zesty and attention-grabbing—ideal for warm-weather sipping, parties, or any moment that calls for a fun, tropical-leaning tequila drink. If you like Margaritas that lean bright and citrusy with a touch of sweetness, this one lands right in your wheelhouse.

Ingredients
Cocktail Colin says:
Tequila blanco leads with clean agave snap, while lime juice brings a bright, icy tang that’s rounded by the orange-citrus sweetness of blue curaçao, and a pinch of salt sharpens the whole mix into a vivid sweet-sour rush. It works because the salt and lime keep the curaçao from turning cloying, making it ideal for drinkers who like bold citrus, a touch of sweetness, and a tequila-forward profile.

FAQ's
What gives the Blue Frozen Margarita its distinctive blue color?
The distinctive blue color of the Blue Frozen Margarita comes from Blue Curaçao, a liqueur flavored with the dried peel of the Laraha citrus fruit, which is dyed blue, giving cocktails a vibrant hue.
How should I serve a Blue Frozen Margarita?
A Blue Frozen Margarita should be served in a cocktail glass. For an extra touch, the rim of the glass can be salted by rubbing a lime wedge around it and then dipping the rim in salt. This adds to the aesthetic and complements the drink's flavors.
Can I adjust the alcohol content in a Blue Frozen Margarita?
Yes, the alcohol content in a Blue Frozen Margarita can be adjusted by changing the ratio of Tequila and Blue Curaçao. For a stronger drink, increase the amount of Tequila, and for a less alcoholic version, reduce the Tequila or substitute some of it with additional lime juice or a non-alcoholic blue syrup.
Is there a non-alcoholic version of the Blue Frozen Margarita?
Yes, a non-alcoholic version of the Blue Frozen Margarita can be made by substituting the Tequila and Blue Curaçao with a non-alcoholic blue syrup or blue-tinted fruit juice and lime juice. You can still capture the aesthetics and some of the flavor profiles, minus the alcohol.
What is the difference between a Blue Frozen Margarita and a traditional Margarita?
The main differences between a Blue Frozen Margarita and a traditional Margarita are the addition of Blue Curaçao in the former, which gives it a vibrant blue color, and the texture. While traditional Margaritas can be served on the rocks (with ice cubes) or straight up (without ice), a Blue Frozen Margarita is blended with ice, giving it a slushy consistency. Additionally, traditional Margaritas usually use Triple Sec or Cointreau instead of Blue Curaçao.
