FAQ's
What is the origin of the Kew Punch cocktail?
The Kew Punch cocktail does not have a widely known specific origin, but it borrows from the tradition of punch recipes that have been popular in social gatherings for centuries. Punches, including those like the Kew Punch, often combine spirits, fruit juices, and spices to create a communal drink that is both flavorful and refreshing.
Can I make a non-alcoholic version of the Kew Punch?
Yes, a non-alcoholic version of the Kew Punch can be made by substituting the alcoholic ingredients with non-alcoholic alternatives. For example, non-alcoholic spirits can replace vodka and gin, while a mixture of fruit juices and a touch of non-alcoholic bitters can substitute for the other alcoholic components. The key is to balance the sweetness and acidity to replicate the original taste.
How do I properly serve the Kew Punch?
The Kew Punch should be served in a highball glass over ice to ensure it remains cold. Garnish with a slice of orange or lemon and a cherry to enhance the presentation and add a bit of extra flavor. It's also traditional to stir the punch before serving to make sure all the ingredients are evenly mixed.
What food pairings go well with the Kew Punch?
Since the Kew Punch is fruity and slightly sweet with a bit of spice from the ginger ale and Angostura bitters, it pairs well with a variety of foods. Light appetizers, seafood dishes, and spicy Asian or Latin cuisines can complement its flavors beautifully. Avoid overly sweet desserts, as they might compete with the cocktail's balance.
How can I adjust the alcohol content if the current level is too high or too low for my taste?
To adjust the alcohol content in the Kew Punch, you can modify the proportions of the alcoholic ingredients. If you find it too strong, reduce the quantities of the spirits and substitute the difference with more ginger ale or lemonade. Conversely, if you prefer a stronger punch, you can increase the amounts of vodka, gin, cherry brandy, red vermouth, and orange liqueur slightly, making sure not to overpower the balance of flavors.

I tried this with just 20ml of cherry brandy and used 45ml of orange liqueur. It turned out delightfuly balanced; the orange liqueur really uplifted the overall flavor. The drink was slightly sweeter but refreshing and bubbly, definitely a great mix for those who enjoy a citrusy twist!
