This bar was about four blocks from the house I grew up in and I’m tickled pink that a modern classic came from it. It’s now sadly permanently closed, most probably a casualty of COVID-19. The drink is a balanced blend that highlights the smokiness of mezcal with the floral sweetness of elderflower liqueur. It is further complemented by the bittersweet complexity of Punt e Mes vermouth and a touch of fresh lemon juice.

Power tips
Elevate the Maximillian Affair with these master mixologist tips

To elevate the smokiness of the Mezcal, consider rinsing your coupe glass with a few drops of peaty Scotch whisky before pouring the cocktail. This step adds an extra layer of complexity and enhances the smokiness without overpowering the original flavor.
Use a fresh St. Germain elderflower liqueur. Over time, the liqueur can lose some of its floral brightness, which is critical for the balance of the Maximillian Affair. Keeping it fresh ensures the cocktail retains its elegant character.

FAQ's

Origins history icon

What is the history behind the Maximillian Affair cocktail?

The Maximillian Affair cocktail was crafted by bartender Misty Kalkofen in 2008 at the Green Street Bar in Cambridge, Boston. Misty's creation quickly garnered a reputation for its unique and balanced flavor profile, combining mezcal, elderflower liqueur, red vermouth, and lemon juice. The cocktail was named in honor of Maximillian, a known eldritch figure in Germany, and symbolizes a union of flavors as the elderflower harmonizes with the smoky mezcal. Green Street Bar unfortunately closed down, but the Maximillian Affair remains a testimony to the creativity thriving in local bars and has achieved modern classic status.

Ingredient substitutions icon

Can I substitute any ingredients in the Maximillian Affair cocktail?

If you're looking to experiment with the Maximillian Affair cocktail, there are a few substitutions you can consider. Instead of mezcal, which contributes a distinct smoky flavor, you could use a lightly smoked tequila, though this would alter the defining character of the original cocktail. If St. Germain elderflower liqueur isn't available, other elderflower liqueurs may be used, though St. Germain is specifically recommended for its balanced sweetness and floral notes. For red vermouth, if Punt e Mes is not accessible, you can substitute it with another rich, bittersweet vermouth like Carpano Antica Formula to maintain the cocktail's intricacy.

Preparation techniques icon

What is the proper technique to prepare a Maximillian Affair cocktail?

To properly prepare a Maximillian Affair cocktail, you'll need a cocktail shaker and a coupe glass. Begin by adding the measured quantities of mezcal, elderflower liqueur, red vermouth, and fresh lemon juice into your shaker with ice. The cocktail is then shaken, not stirred, which is crucial to ensure the ingredients chill and integrate properly while also slightly diluting. This process enhances the overall texture and flavor balance of the cocktail. Once shaken, strain the mixture into a coupe glass, which perfectly showcases the cocktail's elegance. Serve it cold to accentuate the refreshing and aromatic qualities of the drink.

Serving suggestions icon

What is the best way to serve a Maximillian Affair cocktail?

The Maximillian Affair should be served in a coupe glass, which is well-suited for cocktails of this type. This glass choice not only enhances the presentation but also allows the flavors and aromas to concentrate as you sip. Make sure the cocktail is served cold; chilling the glass beforehand is an excellent way to maintain the optimal temperature. Presenting it on a coaster or a cocktail napkin adds a touch of sophistication. With its blend of smoky, sweet, and citrusy elements, the Maximillian Affair makes an excellent pre-dinner drink, stimulating the palate and setting the stage for a delightful evening.

Occasion suitability icon

For what occasions is the Maximillian Affair cocktail suitable?

The Maximillian Affair cocktail is an excellent choice for a variety of occasions due to its sophisticated yet approachable profile. Its balance of smoky, floral, and citrus flavors makes it an ideal cocktail for celebrations that call for something special and memorable. It's particularly well-suited for cocktail parties, upscale gatherings, and dinner parties where you wish to impress guests with a modern classic cocktail. Additionally, its refreshing qualities make it a good aperitif, initiating and enhancing a dining experience. The Maximillian Affair's versatility also means it can comfortably transition from sophisticated brunches to evening gatherings, making it a staple for any cocktail repertoire.
