Rising Sun is a bright, fruit-forward vodka highball-style drink served over ice in a lowball glass, built for easy sipping and bold citrus. It doesn’t sit among the widely documented classics with a fixed origin story; instead, it reads like a modern crowd-pleaser that leans on clean vodka and punchy juices to deliver a simple, sunny profile.
You’ll find the vodka keeps the base crisp and neutral, letting the grapefruit juice take the lead with its zesty tartness and slight bitterness. Passion fruit syrup layers in a lush, tropical sweetness that softens grapefruit’s edge and adds a rounded, fragrant fruit note. Together, the syrup’s sweetness and the grapefruit’s sharpness create a balanced sweet-tart rhythm, with the vodka stretching the flavours into a smooth, refreshing finish.
Serve it when you want something vibrant and uncomplicated—brunch, warm afternoons, or early-evening catch-ups all suit it well. It’s ideal if you like citrus-driven drinks but don’t want them too sour, and it also works as an approachable option for guests who prefer fruitier cocktails without heavy richness.

Cocktail Colin says:
Vodka lays a clean base for a flood of grapefruit juice, while passion fruit syrup adds a lush tropical sweetness that rounds the citrus bite and lingers on the finish. The tart grapefruit keeps the passion fruit syrup from feeling cloying and gives the vodka something to carry; it’s ideal for drinkers who want an easy, bold, fruit-forward sipper without much boozy heat.

FAQ's
What is the flavor profile of the Rising Sun cocktail?
The Rising Sun cocktail offers a refreshing and tangy flavor profile, thanks to the combination of sharp vodka, tart grapefruit juice, and the sweet, exotic touch of passion fruit syrup. This mix results in a well-balanced drink with a complex taste that's both fruity and invigorating.
Can I make a non-alcoholic version of the Rising Sun?
Yes, you can easily create a non-alcoholic version of the Rising Sun by substituting the vodka with sparkling water or a non-alcoholic spirit designed to mimic vodka's clean taste. This way, you still get to enjoy the refreshing blend of grapefruit and passion fruit flavors.
How should I garnish a Rising Sun cocktail?
A Rising Sun cocktail can be beautifully garnished with a slice of grapefruit or a twist of grapefruit peel to enhance its visual appeal and subtly add to its citrus aroma. A sprig of mint or a few passion fruit seeds can also add color and a hint of additional flavor.
What type of food pairs well with a Rising Sun?
Given its bright and tangy profile, the Rising Sun pairs well with seafood dishes, like shrimp cocktails or grilled fish, and light salads. Its refreshing nature also complements spicier foods by providing a palate-cleansing effect.
Is the Rising Sun suitable for all seasons or specific occasions?
While its refreshing nature makes the Rising Sun particularly suitable for warmer seasons like spring and summer, its vibrant flavor profile allows it to be enjoyed year-round. It's also a great choice for brunch gatherings, outdoor barbecues, or any occasion that calls for a light and fruity cocktail.
