In the past two decades, the way in which the public has interacted with non-alcoholic beverages has profoundly changed. Because of this, many of the world's leading companies offer 0% options on beer, wine and other drinks. Due to this trend, we have also seen the rise of the mocktail, the non-alcoholic version of the cocktail.

They have evolved to become drinks where mixologists can experiment with taste and visual presentation and show off their creative flair. Japanese flavours such as matcha and yuzu have made their imprint in this sector too, bringing with them a taste of the land of the rising sun.

Innovation and Cultural Influence Across Sectors

In fact, the influence of Japanese creativity and design can be seen across industries globally. In cinema, filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa influenced directors like George Lucas through techniques such as the use of the weather as a storytelling device, shaping Lucas as he directed Star Wars. Furthermore, in the iGaming sector, gamers can play Pixel Samurai slot online or other games inspired by Japanese aesthetics. Games like this seamlessly combine retro gaming with new mechanics found in slot games.  Similarly, the Japanese colour, layering and garnishing aesthetics have influenced the world of marketing, food photography and social media content. From movies to iGaming, the unique lens through which Japan sees the world continues to affect creative innovation.

Japanese Ingredients Revolutionising Mocktail Culture

Globally, both the professionals and the DIY mocktail makers have begun using Japanese flavours. Matcha, a green tea powder, has become a go-to in mocktails with a striking green hue that instantly attracts the eye. Yuzu, a citrus fruit, brings something different with a floral aroma and some acidity to pique the taste buds of drinkers. While on the sweet side, ume plum syrup adds something a bit different to drinks.

For famous Japanese concoctions around the world, would-be travellers can travel to cities such as London or New York and find a range of Japanese infused mocktails. Melbourne, is no different with speciality diners like Saké restaurant making yuzu-infused drinks that come with edible garnishes, highlighting the emphasis on creativity, visual appeal and aroma. These examples highlight the influence Japan has on our mocktail experiences, no matter which corner of the world you are in.

Elevating the Mocktail Experience

Many Japanese exports that have made their way around the globe. World-famous companies like Coca-Cola and Nestlé have created Japanese-infused drinks and chocolate, highlighting just how important the gastronomy culture of Japan is. When it comes to mocktails, they are more than just a drink and provide us with an insight into Japanese culture. Every aspect of the drink is carefully curated and represents something more than meets the eye. A sparkling yuzu spritz may evoke the famous spring blossoms of the country, while matcha brings with it a link to traditional tea ceremonies.

No longer are mocktails ignored, and the influence of Japan in this cannot be overlooked. The integration of their flavours and aesthetics resonates worldwide and continues to affect how mixologists make their drinks in bars and restaurants globally.

Bartender's top tip

A well-chosen garnish can enhance both the flavor and appearance of your cocktail. Beyond the visual appeal, garnishes like citrus twists, olives, or cocktail onions can subtly influence the overall taste profile of your drink. Practice techniques like expressing a citrus peel to release the aromatic oils over the drink, enhancing its aroma and flavor.
